Near Noxon, Montana
Original titled by the photographer: “Tenting on the old campground- a familiar scene in eastern Washington.” (Wilse, University of Washington Special Collections NA-1318), likely taken in the 1890s. After a major search, this repeat photograph was taken just east of the Idaho border in Montana (!) along the Clark Fork River near the town of Noxon in 2014 (CW-2014-05-26). If I have found the right location, the original photograph was likely taken off the right-of-way along the Northern Pacific Railroad, and has been dramatically altered by the lake impounded behind the Cabinet Gorge Dam, and a re-routing of the railroad across a deep fill through the lake. The traditional campground is at the mouth of the Bull River with the Clark Fork.
