City of Vancouver from Fairview district, at the corner of Birch and Seventh in c. 1890 (Chapman, City of Vancouver Archives-1376-204), and in 2012 (CW-2012-04-28-174).
Due to tall buildings, the repeat photograph was taken from an office building window overlooking the original photographer’s location. The house in the older photograph is clearly a double exposure inserted into the landscape image. The amazing height of old Douglas firs is shown by the remaining tree standing on the shore about where the Sylvia Hotel sits today.
